What to do in Interlaken

Last year, Switzerland set a new record with 42.8 million overnight stays. It’s obvious why so many people want to visit this beautiful country, but even with so many tourists, you can still manage to find hidden gems. ⁠

It sees only a small fraction of tourists each year, but it was one of our favorite places that we visited in Switzerland!⁠

This gorge was formed over 10,000 years ago after the last Ice Age. Today, milky blue glacial water still flows through the narrow limestone gorge covered in moss. The vibrant colors and unique formations make this one of the most beautiful gorges in the world. ⁠

📍Location: Meiringen, Switzerland (near Interlaken)⁠
🚗 Directions: There is an East and West Entrances; the West Entrance is the most popular. Both entrances can be reached by the Meiringen–Innertkirchen Railway (Zentralbahn).⁠
💰Fee: 12 CHF ⁠
🥾Distance: The gorge walk is about 1 mile long and follows along an elevated boardwalk and through tunnels. A train will take you back to the other entrance, or you can walk back through the gorge. ⁠
📚Interesting History: The gorge opened to tourists in 1888. You can also see the entrance to two underground WWII bunkers in the gorge. The Aare River is also the longest river that resides entirely in Switzerland. ⁠

The mighty Lütschine offers some of the best whitewater rafting in the Swiss Alps. Straight from the start, below the Eiger north face, continuous class III-IV rapids surge down from the mountains and out into the Interlaken valley and the Lake of Brienz. It is an exhilarating rush from start to finish.⁠
