General Questions

  • Swiss Law and house rules:

    Switzerland has a strict “No Noise” after 22.00pm policy. Please respect the law, our neighbours and your fellow travellers who maybe wanting a good night’s sleep. When the club is closed we will ask you to make your way to your rooms or go out as quietly as possible.
    Balmers Hostel is a typical Wooden Chalet and there is to be NO SMOKING anywhere indoors apart from the designated Smoking area. This is for your safety. Anyone caught smoking within the rooms or buildings will be subjected to a fine.

  • What is the difference between the camping and the Balmers Herberge?

    Balmers Hostel is the main hostel set in a typical Swiss Chalet. It has several different dorm and private room types, and it is open the whole year.
    Balmers Camping is a short 10 to 15 min walk from the main hostel and is open during the summer season only. The tents/rooms are large, weather proof marquees on a wooden base with a high ceiling, ample room for your luggage and set in a lovely rural area surrounded by mountains. A unique experience!

  • Am I allowed to use the facilities in the camping, even if I am staying in the Balmers Herberge and vice versa?

    Yes, of course. Our guests are allowed to use all facilities in the camping and in the hostel.

  • What is Balmers Herberge ?

    Balmers is the first private hostel in Switzerland and truly is a home away from home for travellers from all over the world! With friendly and knowledgable staff, we continue to strive towards providing travellers everything they wish for in a hostel and more!

  • What time is check in and check out?

    Check out is at 10am
    Check in to the private rooms starts from 12pm
    Check in to the dorm rooms starts from 3pm

  • I'm arriving really late, will I still be able to check in?

    Yes, our night reception will be open until around1 am. Should you arrive later than that, we will leave an envelope on the night reception desk with all the information and the key to your room.

  • How do I get to the hostel from the train station / bus station?

    By bus:
    From the Interlaken West station take the bus number 105 and get off at the stop Hotel Sonne.
    From the Ost Station take the bus number 104 and get off at the stop Hotel Sonne.
    We are about 30 meters from both stops. Bus fare is Sfr 3.80 per person. Busses start running from 07.00am till about 20:30pm.

    Walking:
    It takes about 15 minutes.
    From Interlaken West station – turn left out of the station and follow the main street, turn right at the traffic circle just after Mc Donalds all the way down. Stay on the left hand side of the road and walk straight until you see brown signs pointing to Balmers.
    From Interlaken Ost station – exit straight out of station, between the bank and the Coop shopping Centre, straight through two traffic circles, and follow brown signs to BALMERS.

    You can also get a taxi for about 15 chf from either train station.

    From the airport:
    We have three major airports, Zurich, Geneva and Basel

    Yes, a continental breakfast buffet is included in your room rate (unless specified for specials). We also serve cooked hot breakfast from our menu at an additional cost.

  • Is there WiFi at the hostel?

    Yes. We provide free high speed wifi in all areas of the hostel as well as in the rooms.

  • Do you have a Jacuzzi?

    Yes, we do and it’s free to use for our guests. Sign up time sheets are in reception.

  • What is included in the price of my bed?

    The price of your bed includes a free continental breakfast, bed linen and free WiFi access and a free Tourist card/bus pass.

  • Can I store my luggage at the hostel after check out?

    We have coin operated lockers at the back of the hostel.

  • Do you provide towels?

    We only provide towels in the private rooms. If you would like to rent a towel, you can do so at the hostel reception for 2chf for the duration of your stay.

  • Is bed linen provided?

    Yes. We provide bed linen.

  • Is parking available at the hostel?

    Yes, our car park is at the Balmers camping, which is a short 4 min drive or 10 to 15min walk away on the same road.

  • Is there a guest kitchen at the hostel?

    Yes, we have a fully equipped kitchen for our guests to use for free.

  • What other facilities do you have in the hostel?

    Games room with pool table, ping pong and the fuss ball table all free to use.
    Hammock room where you can chill out after an eventful day out in the Bernese Oberland.
    Laundry room with 4 washing machines and dryers, coin operated, wash powder available at reception
    TV room where you can catch up on the latest news.
    Garden where you can relax and enjoy the sun or challenge your friends in the giant chess board

    During the summer season we have our outdoor restaurant open, serving delicious burgers and tasty salads. For special meals and group bookings, please send us an enquiry over email.

  • What is Balmers camping ?

    The camping provides three types of accommodation. All tents are walk in, with high ceilings and have wooden floors. The tents are made of durable canvas with steel frames. They are airy, comfortable and clean.

    We provide 6 bed dormitory style tents, 2 bed and 3 bed private rooms:

    -6 bedded tens – 3 bunks in each room with bed linen, a blanket and duvet. Each tent has lights, a chair and a trash bin..
    -2 Bed Private Rooms – large double bed with linen, towels, table and chair, mirror, light and a trash bin.
    -3 Bed Private Rooms – combination of either double and single bed or single bed and two bunks with linen, towels light and trash bin.

  • What time is check in and check out?

    Check out is at 10am
    Check in to the private rooms starts from 5 pm
    Check in to the dorm rooms starts from 5 pm

    No, but you can have a continental buffet breakfast for an extra 5chf at the main hostel, or get some breakfast food from the supermarket across the road and enjoy it in the garden at the camping.

  • Is there WiFii at the Tents?

    Yes, we provide high speed free Wifi in the whole of the Tent area.

  • Do you have a Jacuzzi and a pool?

    Yes, we do and it’s free to use for our guests to enjoy!

  • What is included in the price of my bed?

    The price of your bed includes a bed linen and free WiFi access and a free Tourist Card/buspass.

    Yes, you can use our outdoor BBQ , and you can purchase plastic cutlery and coal from reception, food can be bought from the supermarket across the road.

    Ping pong table, hammocks, Jacuzzi, pool, slack line, bike pump track and a huge garden where to chill and enjoy the beautiful views

  • Are the tents safe?

    Each tent can be locked and only the people staying in them have the access code. Locks are provided for the private ones. Although Interlaken is deemed a very safe place to stay please use the lockers in the main area to store your valuables. Balmers holds no responsibility for things stolen or misplaced when not using the lockers. We offer a security man at night to patrol the area as an added precaution.

  • Are the Tents waterproof and warm?

    The Tents are made of sturdy canvas material and are on a raised wooden floor, they are very water proof. Occasionally in the summer months we have some cold spouts and extra blankets can be asked for at the main bar/reception in case you are cold

  • What are the shower facilities like?

    Showers are communal and are located in the main tent area behind the bar/reception. Hot water is available at all times

  • IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:

    Switzerland has a strict No noise after 22.00 pm policy and as you are staying in Tents we ask for your cooperation and respect other fellow travellers who maybe wanting to sleep. The tents are made of canvas, therefore talking loud will cause everyone to hear..
    We ask that once the bar closes at 22.00pm that noise levels are kept at a minimum.
    During bar/reception hours any alcohol consumed at the counter and the front area camping, must be purchased from our bar only. Other alcoholic drinks not purchased from our bar can be consumed at the back of the main star tent area only.
    The pool and Jacuzzi are off limits after 22.00pm for your own safety.
    Please do not smoke in the Tents…

    Yes, absolutely! You can still visit the Lauterbrunnen valley to see the waterfalls, take a cruise on one of the emerald green lakes, gain knowledge about chocolate making at the Chocolate Workshop, go river rafting or learn to climb in the indoor climbing wall. In Winter you can use Interlaken as a base to experience day trips to other Cities around Switzerland as we are so centrally located.

  • Shopping?

    The main street, which is about 10 min walk, is the best area to go shopping and fill up in souvenirs. The street runs from the Ost Station to the West Station.
    There is also a Oberland Shopping Centre across the road from the camping (max 15 min from the main hostel), which has clothes stores like New Yorker, Blackout, Oschner Sport and a grocery shop called Spar and Denner. Only a 2 minute walk away you will find our local Coop supermarket and a couple of Bakeries with freshly baked treats!

    – Balmers uses industry-standard security encryption to ensure that your credit card and personal details remain safe and secure. We will never pass any of this information to any 3rd party.
    – You are charged a 12% deposit that is non-refundable and non-transferable.
    – The balance owed will be due in full on arrival.
    – You must check your e-mail confirmation carefully as we are not responsible for errors you may have made in entering your details. Making changes is not always possible.

  • Can I make a reservation without a credit card?

    No. You’ll need a valid credit card to make a reservation online and pay the required deposit. However, you are able to pay the remainder of the balance in cash on arrival if you wish. If you would like to use cash to make a booking please visit our reception in Balmers Hostel.

  • Can I book for someone else using my credit or debit card?

    Yes. Please make the reservation using your details and contact us to change the name on the booking once confirmed.

  • Reservation over the telephone

    We highly recommend to make the reservations over the email or on our website to avoid any miscommunication.

  • Walk in bookings

    You are more than welcome to arrive in Balmers last minute, however we cannot guarantee availability for your requested room types or dates so pre-booking is recommended.

  • Cancellation policy

    A 24-hour cancellation notice is required if you wish to cancel or change a booking. You have to notify our staff no later than 10am on the day before your arrival date in order to prevent a full night being charged to your credit card.
    Please note that online deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable.

    Yes, we are happy to extend your reservation, pending availability.

  • What is your policy for guests who are under 18?

    If you are under 18 and not part of a school group, you must be accompanied by a responsible adult. No one under the age of 18 can share a dormitory with anyone who is not part of their group. Our Club is strictly no Under 18. (apart from special parties advertised)

  • How can I pay?

    We accept most major credit cards. You can also pay in cash when you arrive, however if you book online your deposit must be secured using a credit or debit card. We exchange Euros and Us Dollars at reception at no extra charge!

  • Do I need to bring the credit or debit card I booked online with?

    No, you can pay with a different credit/debit card or in cash.

  • What’s the city tax?

    The city tax of 2.80chf per person per night is being used to pay for tourist infrastructure such as transportation, information services, cultural performances, etc. Swiss people staying in a town where they don’t have permanent residence pay the tax too.

  • Is there VAT in Switzerland?

    The special value-added-tax (VAT) rate of 3.8% accorded to the hotel industry for accommodation services is included in the room price.
