The most beautiful places in the Jungfrau region

The Jungfrau region is definitely one of the most beautiful regions in Switzerland visited by thousands of locals and international tourists every year. No wonder! The Jungfrau Region offers incredible scenery full of greenery, glaciers, high mountains, romantic villages, and many tourist attractions.

Here are places in the Jungfrau Region that you need to visit:

Iselwald

Iseltwald is a pretty village on the shores of Lake Brienz. You will find pictures of it a lot on Instagram. This small village is so photogenic! The most famous photo is of Seeburg Castle, which is a castle on a peninsula. This village is a small bubble of relaxation by the lake. Life seems to flow out of time, on the shores of a hypnotic turquoise-blue lake. Add to that a steamboat gently gliding towards the small port of the village and the picture is just perfect.

Giessbach waterfall

The nature park of Giessbach, which overlooks Lake Brienz, is worth a visit. The falls are very impressive, which makes them quite touristy. It is actually 14 waterfalls that bounce off the rock for almost 500 meters. The falls are located 35 minutes from the village of Iseltwald and next to the Grandhotel Giessbach, this torrent flows into Lake Brienz. This waterfall is really very beautiful and impressive, plus you can go behind the waterfall and there is a breathtaking view of the lake.

Jungfraujoch

Die Jungfrau-Aletsch site is one of the most exceptional natural wonders of the Alps, listed by UNESCO in 2001. The site is superb. It is a fragile place that does not leave anyone indifferent once you understand its importance.

You can reach the summit by train. Once you have arrived, there are a lot of activities to do:

• The Sphinx: the platform at 3,571 m to admire the Great Aletsch Glacier, as well as the Jungfrau and other peaks at 4,000 m
  Have a coffee in the snow on a lounge chair in the bar, and admire the view.
• Ice Palace: ice tunnels dug into the glacier, dotted with ice sculptures.
• Alpine Sensation: through various rooms, you discover the history of the people who climbed and developed the site.
• Glacier Plateau: just below the Sphinx, here you have snow 365 days a year
• Go to Lindt (yes, it’s cliché, but it’s chocolate, how can you resist?)
• Getting to the Mönchsjochhütter in 45 minutes on foot

Kleine Scheidegg

From the Eiger glacier, you can take an easy hike to Kleine Scheidegg. A path that descends gently. In the beginning, you follow the glacier, then you pass in front of the small chalet “Mittellegi”, before arriving at a very photogenic small lake (Fallbodensee). A few more efforts on an easy path (good shoes recommended) and here you are at Kleine Scheidegg. Either you take advantage of the places and the Belle Époque atmosphere, or you take the train directly back down to Grindelwald. Beneath its gleaming look, the WengernalpBahn is quite simply the longest continuous cogwheel train… in the world.

Officially, the hike is 2.5 km long and takes around 1 hour, with an elevation gain of 260 m. But it can last longer if you want to take pictures, and enjoy the panorama.

Grindelwald

The village is a resort facing the Eiger, located in the Swiss Alps, more precisely in the Bernese Oberland, Jungfrau region.

Grindelwald is known as a picture-postcard mountainous place, as it is mainly characterized by breathtaking mountainous and alpine scenery. So much so that it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most romantic and fascinating valleys in all of Switzerland, increasingly appreciated and preferred by many tourists and hikers from all over the world.

First -Bachalpsee

Erste (altitude 2,168 meters) is one of the most famous places in Grindelwald. Several activities are possible: hikes, the First Cliff Walk, First Flyer, mountain scooters, and so on. Here, everything is done for thrills. You can also do the First-Bachalpsee hike.

The First Cliff Walk is a screened walkway on the side of a cliff. Along the rock wall, you sometimes have to bend to pass and cross a bridge that moves under your feet, before arriving at a platform for the great selfie with the Eiger.

Männlichen

To get there, take the cable car to Grindelwald Terminal (included in the pass). This is followed by a peaceful journey of about 20 minutes which takes you directly to Männlichen (2,230 m.). There are 2 intermediate stations, but no change. With luck, you may even observe marmots lounging on stone blocks during your climb. It’s so cool! Once at the top, the panorama of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau is breathtaking.

In fact, Männlichen is really THE place to enjoy the grandiose views:

• Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau
• Grindelwald Valley
• Lauterbrunnen Valley (you can even see the Staubbach waterfall)

Wengen

Wengen lies at 1274 meters above sea level on a beautiful high plateau in the Bernese Oberland. The village is known for its annual Lauberhorn race. Wengen is the starting point for 500 km of hiking trails and 100 km of ski slopes. Located at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, it is completely car-free. 6 ski lifts and 10 chair lifts take visitors up the mountain in the Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen-Grindelwald/Wengen ski area.

Schynige Platte

An excursion to the Schynige Platte is a beautiful day in the green, in the middle of unspoiled nature very rich in alpine plants, with breathtaking panoramas of the Jungrau region. Even better, you will see geological formations with strange shapes, which are sometimes reminiscent of the American West and the sets of Tolkien.

Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is a well-known village and very popular with tourists. This village is very famous thanks to the photos showing a large waterfall which plunges majestically near a small church. In fact, the Staubbach waterfall flows along the rock face, in the very heart of the village. The Lauterbrunnen Valley is famous for its many waterfalls, which gave it the nickname “Valley of 72 waterfalls”. The landscape is unique because it is dug in the shape of a U, very steeply cut by the passage of a glacier, which has left behind it steep cliffs sometimes 400 meters high. No doubt, gigantic forces were at work here.

Trümmelbach Fall

The only underground glacial waterfalls in the world to be accessible by an elevator! It’s in Switzerland and it’s the best! The Trummelbach waterfalls it is 400 m of galleries, 5 tunnels, 30 m of bridges, 16 lighthouses, 32 projectors, and 20,000 liters of water per second, it makes noise.

Schilthorn – Piz Gloria – Birg Thrill Walk

One of the must-sees during your stay in the Bernese Oberland is undoubtedly the Schilthorn. An impressive mountain, with many activities available and pleasant moments in perspective. Its summit, the Piz Gloria (2,970 m.) is famous, in particular for having served as the setting for a James Bond movie. Once there, references to the film are everywhere, from the handprints of the actors to the fake bomb and its countdown placed in front of the entrance to the gondola. But Schilthorn – Piz Gloria is more than that.

You can spend a full day there. If you are athletic and a motivated hiker, you can try the hike up on foot. Otherwise, you can take the gondola /ski lifts and early departure from the Schilthornbahn station. Throughout the climb, you enjoy spectacular views, especially of the Mürrenbach waterfall (417 m.). With a bit of luck, you can even see chamois! The full ascent requires 2 changes, which allows you to visit the intermediate stations if you wish.

• Piz Gloria: the 360-degree panorama is pretty crazy! Front row seats: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The opportunity here to finally learn who is who and to observe them “face to face”. On a clear day, the view extends to the Jura and even allows you to see a part of Mont-Blanc 110 km away! Come early in the morning, it will be so calm. The 2 key attractions of Piz Gloria (outside the panorama) are the various James Bond points and the revolving restaurant where you can have your brunch.
• Birg: the station where you could faint from vertigo. This is the station where there is the Skyline Walk (a mesh platform suspended over the void) and the Thrill Walk (of the same kind). After that, you can go for a hike to Lake Grauseeli (duration of roughly 2 hour

Mürren

Mürren hat eine pretty car-free village, cute, very typical, and rustic, located at 1,638 m in the Jungfrau region. The village is also well known for the waterfall of the same name: the Mürrenbachfall, 417 meters!

You have to start the visit by strolling through the village and in particular on the main street with its many bistros and the Eiger in the background. You are immediately charmed by the beautiful rustic chalets, with lots of very photogenic little details.
