After covid holidays – Summer 2021 : what to do in Interlaken

Yes, Balmers Hostel is finally open again after a couple of months of closing due to the covid 19 pandemic.

Staying in Switzerland?

Be sure to visit Interlaken, a region of lakes and mountains in the heart of the Bernese Oberland! It is the perfect base to explore the amazing Jungfraujoch region. Ideally located between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, not far from Bern, the resort city is the ideal starting point for many excursions and activities. Its imposing alpine environment attracts winter skiers and has a vast network of hiking trails in summer. Boat trips on the lake or on the cogwheel train, historical monuments, and museums complete the panel for exploring Interlaken as it should be.

Are you visiting Interlaken?

Interlaken and Jungfrau Region at its best. Be it natural beauty with mountains or lakes or culture or adventure and delicious meals. It has it all. You have all the ingredients to make perfect Vacations.

Here’s a list of THINGS TO DO in Interlaken or the Bernese Oberland

Follow our selection of the 10 must-do’s in Interlaken!

1. Hike the Northface trail to glimpse the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfraujoch

what to do Interlaken

This is an amazing trail that provides multiple incredible views through the hike. We recommend taking the Allmendhubel lift to start the hike and finish in Gimmelwald. It is the easiest way. The first 45 minutes of the trail is wide open walking along the ridge of the prairie and can be hot as it is in direct sun so don’t forget your hat and sunscreen. After crossing into the valley there are around 30 minutes uphill but it is totally manageable. The rest of the way is flat or downhill so you can enjoy the view and not worry about the climb. There are multiple places to stop and have lunch or a snack. But you can also stop at one that had self-serve cheese and meat.

2. Harder Kulm

Harder Kulm is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region. At an altitude of 1,322 meters, a footbridge offers a breathtaking panorama over the two lakes of Thun and Brienz and over the peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

During summer and winter, marked trails make Harder Kulm a hiker’s paradise. With a bit of luck, you will spot ibex, chamois, marmots, or golden eagles at Alpenwildpark.

3. Saint Béatus caves

On the shores of Lake Thun, the caves of Saint Béatus are not to miss! The Legend says that once, a dragon sowed terror in a large cave on the shores of Lake Thun. It was an Irish monk by the name of Saint Beatus who have managed to drive him out, thus allowing visitors to access the caves without danger.

A short walk in the forest, punctuated by small bridges and waterfalls now leads to the entrance to the premises. Once inside, nearly 1,000 meters of marked and lighted paths lead to immense stalactites and stalagmites, vast cavities, and deep gorges. Educational and fun, the cave museum completes the visit very well.

4. Rothorn cogwheel train

Since 1892, this cogwheel train has transported passengers from Brienz to the Rothorn Kulm upper station daily. The ascent takes about an hour. Along the way, you will cross meadows, forests, and steep cliffs. Once you arrive, a breathtaking panorama awaits you over Lake Brienz and the surrounding 693 peaks. A fantastic experience!

5. Lake Thun

On the shores of Lake Thun, you can take pleasant walks to admire the views of the surroundings. Excursion boats, including a historic paddle-wheel steamer, also offer beautiful lake trips.

6. Lütschine

The Lütschine comes from between the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau and carries the water from the glaciers directly into Lake Brienz. If you come to Interlaken for the adrenaline activities, you should try rafting!

In summer, glacial snow melts in the sun and fills the river with exciting rapids. The excursions are organized in summer, several times a day, and are suitable for different levels. They all start in Interlaken.

7. Be adventurous

Interlaken offers hang gliding, skydiving, and paragliding. You can’t leave without pushing yourself to try one of these. Paragliding is definitely the most popular option and is the most affordable (~$200 USD)

8. Blausee

Take a picnic and relax at Blausee. Blausee is one of the most famous places in Switzerland on Instagram and we understand why! The water is incredibly blue and transparent, you can stay there for hours just to admire the colors. Be careful though, don’t expect a huge lake. The lake is very small and a hotel is right on the edge which makes the place less wild than other lakes around. You will have been around Lake Blausee in 15/20 minutes. It cost 8 euros for the entrance.

9. Oeschinensee

Lake Oeschinensee is only a 20-minute drive from Lake Blausee, so you can visit both on the same day. You can go up by cable car or on foot on a hike (it takes between 30 minutes and an hour of walking). However, the cable car ride costs CHF 28 per adult round trip (CHF 14 for children).

Unlike Blausee, the lake is huge and it takes around 1.5 hours to walk around. It is really nice and the reflection of the mountains in the water of the lake is breathtaking.

10. Lauterbrunnen

The Lauterbrunnen Valley is famous for its numerous waterfalls, which gave its nickname “Valley of 72 Waterfalls”. The landscape is unique. It is dug in the shape of a U deeply enclosed by the passage of a glacier, which has left behind steep cliffs sometimes 400 meters high. You can reach Lauterbrunnen station from Interlaken by train (spectacular route!). On arrival, one can only be impressed by the giant waterfall and the Swiss flag planted in the rock to welcomes you.
