For us, community and connecting with others is a big part of hostel life. It’s something we really care about — bringing people together and creating moments you’ll actually remember after your trip.
At its best, that means spending time outdoors in the mountains. In summer, we might take you on a kayak tour, jump off some cliffs, or gather a group together for an evening swim in the lake with a beer or two.
We want to share our love for this place and help spark new friendships. Sometimes it all starts with simple moments, like sitting around the fire, joining a bachata class, or taking part in a trivia night.
We don’t follow a strict schedule, and things often come together depending on the day, the weather, and the people around. That said, we do run some activities regularly during high season.
If you feel like joining, you’re always welcome. And if not, that’s completely fine too.

Sunset at the Lake Thun
End your day the best way possible by watching the sun melt behind the mountains at the lake. Bring a drink and enjoy the sunset. Maybe you wanna bring your swimsuit and towel if you’re up for a dip in the lake.
Bonfire in the backyard
We love cozy evenings by the backyard fireplace! Grab a drink, join a group of fellow travelers, and dive into an easygoing night under the stars.
Game Nights
Whether you're up for cards, board games, beer pong, or just hanging out – good vibes and new people guaranteed.
Movie Night
Parfois, tout ce dont vous avez besoin est une soirée relaxante avec un bon film et une bonne compagnie. Prenez un pouf, une couverture et installez-vous pour une soirée cinéma à Balmers.
Hike to Giessbach Waterfalls + Lake Swim
Join us on a hike to the impressive Giessbach Falls, along Lake Brienz, where you can cool off with a swim after the hike.
Bring Your Own BBQ
You bring the food, we'll take care of the fire!
Meet up with other travelers in the garden, swap stories, and enjoy the barbecue. This is one of the oldest traditions at Balmers and is very popular with our guests.
Trivia Night and Balmers Club Night
Ready to put your knowledge to the test? At Trivia Night, teamwork is just as important as a sharp mind. Tricky questions, surprising facts – and maybe you'll be the one to clinch the winning round!
And when the trivia wraps up, we will keep the party going at Balmers Club! Here you can celebrate your trivia victory or dance away your sorrows.
