Around Interlaken
Have you come to Interlaken for a bit more rest and respite rather than adrenalin and exercise? There are many other options available.
Höheweg and Höhematte - Interlaken, as the name says, is nestled between two beautiful lakes and is known as ‘The gateway to the Jungfrau region’. The main street is the long “Höheweg” with a train station at each end (Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West). The center of the Höheweg is the Höhematte, a large green meadow with views towards the mountains. Often filled with roaming cows or landing paragliders, there is always something happening on the Höhematte. The Höheweg is full of Souvenir stores and interesting shops.
Chocolate Show - Visit the Chocolate Factory and become a chocolatier! The chocolate show is held Wed – Sun at 5, and 6 pm at the Restaurant Schuh at Höheweg 56, on the Höhematte. Duration of the show is 20 minutes. Entrance fee CHF 14.80 (includes chocolate voucher)
The St-Beatus-Caves - Switzerland's first and only underground cave museum. Explore this mysterious maze of stalactites, stalagmites, lakes and waterfalls. It is accessible by ship, car, bus - or on foot (along the historic pilgrims' path). Open April – Oct, 1.30 – 5 pm. It can get cold in the caves, so bring something warm to wear.
Schweiz. Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg - This unique museum offers a fascinating insight into Swiss rural dwellings and lifestyles dating back several centuries. The many attractions include some 90 buildings, farm animals, plus demonstrations and displays of farming trades and traditional crafts. It is a short scenic train ride to Ballenberg.
Opening hours: April till October, 10am – 5pm
Duration of excursion: full-day
Trümmelbach Gletscherwasserfälle - Ten glacier waterfalls tumbling down, within a mountain. The falls are illuminated, and are accessible by a tunnel-lift. The huge glacial gorges of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau empty into here, transporting around 20,000 tons of sediment a year. These are the only accessible, mountain-interior glacier falls in Europe. Opening hours: April - mid-November 9.00-17.00 hrs / 8.30-18.00 hrs (July + August) Duration: half-day excursion
Harder Kulm - This attractive vantage point offers fine views of the Bernese Oberland "capital" (between the Lakes of Brienz and Thun) as well as the entire Jungfrau Region. Particularly popular with children is the trip to the top by funicular and the Alpine wildlife park at the valley station, near Interlaken Ost railway station.
Opening hours: April - October
Duration: half-day excursion
Boat Cruises - Cosseted by imposing mountains, the Lakes Thun and Brienz are perfect vistas of panoramic Switzerland. Castles, parks and churches can be seen on the banks of the lakes while you enjoy your boat cruise. There is a Restaurant is on board and special prices are available if traveling with a Eurorail Pass.
